When Is the Best Time of Year to Visit Orlando?

When Is the Best Time of Year to Visit Orlando?

It’s one of the questions we’re asked most often: when is the best time of year to visit Orlando?

The answer is… it depends!

Orlando is a year-round destination, and there really isn’t one month that is right for everybody. Some families want plenty of Florida sunshine, others would happily trade a little heat for quieter theme parks, while families travelling during school holidays naturally have fewer dates to choose from. So, rather than telling you when you should visit, here’s our guide to what you can expect at different times of the year.

When Is the Best Time of Year to Visit Orlando?

January and February – cooler days and generally smaller crowds

If you prefer exploring the theme parks without the intense heat of the Florida summer, January and February can be a great time to visit. Daytime temperatures are generally pleasant, although mornings and evenings can feel surprisingly cool – particularly when you’ve left the UK expecting Florida to be hot every day!

Crowd levels can also be lower outside holiday weekends and school breaks, making this an appealing time for couples, families with pre-school children and anyone able to travel outside the main holiday periods. If you're staying in an Orlando villa with a private pool, we would strongly recommend considering pool heating at this time of year.

Good for: Cooler weather, exploring the parks and travelling outside school holidays.

When Is the Best Time of Year to Visit Orlando?

March and April – warmer weather arrives

Spring is a very popular time to visit Orlando. Temperatures are climbing, there is usually plenty of sunshine and the intense heat and humidity of summer have yet to arrive. However, Easter and Spring Break can bring considerably larger crowds to the theme parks, so don't automatically assume that spring means a quiet Orlando holiday.

It's a particularly attractive time of year if you enjoy spending time outside your villa, whether that's having breakfast beside the pool, enjoying an evening drink on the pool deck or taking a break from the theme parks for a day at home.

Good for: Warm weather, outdoor activities and Easter family holidays.

May – a month that can sometimes be overlooked

May can be an excellent time to consider Orlando if you aren't tied to school holidays.

The weather is becoming much warmer, but you are visiting before the main summer holiday period. It's also a lovely time to make full use of your villa's private pool.

As you move towards the end of the month, temperatures and humidity increase and Florida's familiar afternoon showers and thunderstorms become more common.

Good for: Warm weather, villa pool days and those with flexibility over travel dates.

June, July and August – hot, lively and unmistakably Florida

There's no getting around it – Orlando in summer is hot and humid. Temperatures regularly climb into the 30s°C and afternoon thunderstorms are part of the Florida summer experience. These can be incredibly heavy, but they are often relatively short-lived.

Don't let the rain symbols on a weather app frighten you. Seeing thunderstorms forecast every day does not necessarily mean you're going to spend your holiday in the rain!

Summer is also one of the busiest periods because families from both the UK and US are travelling during the school holidays.

The secret is to adapt to Florida rather than fighting it. Visit the parks early, drink plenty of water, take breaks during the hottest part of the day and don't feel that every minute of every holiday needs to be spent inside a theme park.

This is where having your own Orlando villa can really come into its own. After several busy park days, being able to have a slower morning or spend a day beside your own private pool can be very welcome.

Good for: Families travelling during the school summer holidays, hot weather and plenty of pool time.

When Is the Best Time of Year to Visit Orlando?

September – quieter, but still very warm

Once US and UK schools have returned, September can see crowd levels reduce considerably.

It's still hot and humid, and September falls within the Atlantic hurricane season, so changeable weather and thunderstorms remain possible. For people who have the flexibility to travel outside school holidays, however, September can be an interesting month to consider.

Halloween celebrations also begin surprisingly early in Orlando, so by September you'll find seasonal events appearing across the major theme parks.

Good for: Adults, couples and families with younger children who aren't restricted by school dates.

When Is the Best Time of Year to Visit Orlando?

October – Halloween takes over Orlando

October has become an increasingly popular time to visit. Temperatures are generally starting to ease from the height of summer, although it can still be very warm, and Halloween is in full swing. You'll find everything from family-friendly Halloween celebrations to much scarier evening events, particularly at Universal Orlando.

October half-term is naturally popular with UK families, so availability can become more limited around these dates.

Good for: Halloween fans, somewhat milder weather and October half-term holidays.

When Is the Best Time of Year to Visit Orlando?

November – pleasant weather and Christmas begins early

November can offer a lovely combination of generally milder temperatures and the beginning of Orlando's Christmas celebrations.

Thanksgiving, which takes place towards the end of November, is a major US holiday and can bring much larger crowds. Outside the Thanksgiving period, however, November can be a very appealing time to travel.

You may also be surprised by how early Christmas arrives in Orlando. The theme parks and resorts begin transforming for the festive season well before December.

Good for: Christmas atmosphere without actually travelling at Christmas, milder weather and visitors who can avoid Thanksgiving.

When Is the Best Time of Year to Visit Orlando?

December – Orlando at Christmas

If you love Christmas, Orlando certainly knows how to celebrate it. The theme parks, shopping areas, hotels and attractions are filled with decorations, lights and special events.

Early December can be very different from Christmas week itself. Once the main Christmas holiday begins, Orlando becomes extremely busy and the most popular villas can be booked a long way in advance.

Temperatures can also vary considerably. You might experience lovely warm afternoons followed by evenings when you'll be grateful you packed a jumper.

Good for: Christmas fans, festive events and families looking for a very different Christmas holiday.

What about hurricane season?

The official Atlantic hurricane season runs from 1 June until 30 November, with activity historically tending to peak around August, September and October.

That doesn't mean you should avoid Orlando for half the year. Millions of people visit Florida during these months without their holiday being significantly affected.

It does mean you should travel properly insured and keep an eye on reliable weather information if a tropical system develops.

Florida is extremely experienced in dealing with severe weather, and there is usually plenty of warning if a significant storm is approaching.

So, when should you go?

There really isn't a wrong answer.

For cooler temperatures: consider January or February. For warm spring weather: March, April and May can be attractive. For maximum heat and pool time: June, July and August deliver the full Florida summer experience. For potentially lower crowds: look at periods such as September and parts of November, avoiding major holidays. For Halloween: September and October. For Christmas: November and December.

And if you're travelling with school-age children, your decision may already be largely made for you – Easter, summer, October half-term and Christmas will naturally be among the periods you consider.

Our advice? Decide what matters most to you

Rather than searching for the mythical “perfect” month, start by deciding what is most important to your family.

Do you cope well with heat? Are you restricted to school holidays? Do you love Halloween or Christmas? Would you prefer somewhat quieter theme parks? Is spending plenty of time around your villa's private pool an important part of the holiday?

Once you know your priorities, choosing when to visit becomes much easier. And remember, Orlando isn't just about theme parks. One of the pleasures of an Orlando villa holiday is having somewhere of your own to return to after a busy day – and occasionally deciding not to go anywhere at all.

Sometimes a day by your own pool can be every bit as welcome as another day in the parks.
