Universal Halloween Horror Nights Preview
Get ready for some truly grisly, gruesome Halloween horrors in 2026, folks! Universal Orlando has just released its first-look preview of this year’s event, and they are promising a whole new level of blood-splattered glory for their annual Halloween Horror Nights fright-fest. Yes, we’re going deep into the realms of carnival-themed horrors, and that should be great news for everyone who loves this unique offering.
And, while it is really still WAY too early to be thinking about this autumnal extravaganza, Universal is clearly looking to grab our attention in the best possible way by upping the ante on their usual level of fearsome frivolities.
Just to start with, this year’s event will be the 35th outing of this massively popular Halloween haunt, which takes over the Universal Studios park on select evenings from late August to November 1. And that anniversary looks like being a major one in terms of reviving some of the most frightening original creations from Universal’s back-catalogue of creepy characters.
What IS Halloween Horror Nights?
While Walt Disney World ensures a fully family-friendly Halloween experience with their Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party at the Magic Kingdom (for a whopping 38 evenings in 2025), Universal goes full tilt for the jugular with a series of haunted houses and scare zones that borrow heavily from classic horror genres, as well as well-known film and TV franchises such as Stranger Things, Five Nights at Freddy’s and Jason Voorhees.
This separately-ticketed event kicks off at 6.30pm each evening and continues through to 2am. Regular day guests need to vacate the park by 5.30pm, but there is now a special Scream Early ticket that allows entry to the park at 3pm and the chance to enter queues for the houses in advance from 4pm. No costumes or masks are allowed (unlike for the comparative Disney event, where costumes are encouraged). Needless to say, Universal’s HHN is not recommended for children under 13. No food, drinks, bottles, video recording, flash photography, flashlights or laser pens are permitted in the haunted houses. Screaming and sobbing are perfectly fine, though!
Jack and Dr Oddfellow, Together!
The big (early) news for 2026 is that this year will see two of Universal’s greatest characters combining to provide an overall theme AND their own fiendish haunted house. Jack the Clown made his HHN debut in 2000, with notable return visits in 2007, 2015 and 2021, while his sinister boss, Dr. Oddfellow, also made his first appearance in 2000, returning as the primary icon of HHN in 2023.
Now, this autumn, Universal will mark a major milestone as the world’s premier Halloween event returns for its 35th anniversary by celebrating a legacy of horror and unleashing terrifying, immersive experiences that continue to redefine Halloween entertainment, i.e. as fun!
To that end, Universal Studios will play host to the “Infernal Carnival of Nightmares,” as the main theme for this year’s event, transforming the park into a decrepit, fear-fuelled carnival featuring a sinister new slate of haunted houses, scare zones and outrageous entertainment, inspired by those twin demons from HHN history, as well as some of the biggest names in horror. And the ringmasters of this year’s event will be none other than Jack – arguably the most notorious of Universal’s historic Halloween horror icons – and his legendary rival, Dr Oddfellow. HHN 35 will mark the first time these nemeses join forces to wreak havoc among guests. After all, a fear divided is a fear diluted.
And a Haunted House, too
Universal has also revealed that one of the original haunted houses at this year’s event will bring guests face-to-face with the twin icons themselves. In “Jack & Oddfellow: Chaos & Control,” the long-standing conflict between Jack and Oddfellow comes to life for the first time as guests journey into the unsettling origins of the two adversaries’ undying rivalry. As chaos and control collide, the two icons will battle for dominance until they ultimately discover that the only way to obtain the power they seek is not to fight each other – but to combine their ferocious efforts instead.
And that’s all Universal are telling us for now, which is no great surprise, as they love to drip-feed us the gruesome details in the lead-up to the event itself. We still don’t know the exact dates of this year’s horror pageant, although we do know the first night will be August 28 and the finale will be on November 1, and the only thing Universal will say about tickets is that “they will go on sale very soon.” However, a few items from the Halloween Horror Nights 2026 merchandise collection, featuring Jack and Dr Oddfellow, are now on sale, and guests can shop the new apparel and more at select retail locations in Universal Studios or online at shopUniversal.com.
More information about the slate of sinister experiences that awaits guests will be shared in the months ahead. For more information, be sure to visit UniversalOrlando.com/HHN.
