Orlando Celebrates A Major US Anniversary!
By Susan & Simon Veness
It shouldn’t be news to anyone that the USA is honouring a major event this weekend. After all, your 250th anniversary doesn’t come around very often. But, for a city that already revels in its 4th of July celebrations, the country’s big annual shindig will have extra pomp and circumstance – and offer a great opportunity to be part of history.
Yes, The City Beautiful will be going all out for an Independence Day party for the ages, and all our visitors are invited to attend at a scintillating sequence of anniversary events that might well be heard all the way across the Atlantic!
In fact, the full range of America 250 commemorations will last most of July, but the biggest and best will be spread over three days this week, making them must-see excitement for our newly-arriving guests as well as those already in town. Take your pick from a majestic Walt Disney World anniversary salute, a major celebration in the heart of the city and supporting happenings across the metro Orlando area.

A Disney 4th of July
Nobody but nobody does fireworks better than Disney, hence you can expect the usual House of Mouse razzamatazz will be going all the way up to 11 for this event. It gets the big build-up with a TV special Disney Celebrates America, a company-wide celebration commemorating the 250th anniversary, culminating on the July 4 weekend. As a pillar of American storytelling, innovation and imagination, the company will bring the Semiquincentennial to life in uniquely Disney ways on Disney+, Hulu, FX, National Geographic and ABC, leaning into the dreams, stories and optimism that have touched the lives of people across the country and around the world.
The theme park events have already started at EPCOT, with the summer opening of Soarin’ Across America, an all-new version of the Soarin’ ride that takes guests on a breathtaking journey, highlighting the country’s natural beauty and iconic cityscapes. Additionally, the special presentation exhibit of Portraits of Courage: A Commander in Chief’s Tribute to America’s Warriors has been extended through the weekend of July 4 at the American Adventure Pavilion in EPCOT’S World Showcase section. The park’s big special effects extravaganza, Luminous The Symphony of Us, will also be extended with the additional Heartbeat of Freedom fireworks from 9pm on each of July 3, 4 and 5.
Expanding beyond Independence Day into a full three-day jamboree, the Magic Kingdom park’s epic fireworks show Disney’s Celebrate America! – A Fourth of July Concert in the Sky, will play across all three nights of the holiday weekend, July 3-5, where the entire surroundings of the park will join in with a truly massive pyrotechnic extravaganza. And, if there’s one place we’ll want to be this weekend, it is anywhere around the Seven Seas Lagoon in front of the Magic Kingdom just before 9pm!

Universal and SeaWorld, too
Universal Orlando is inviting its guests to celebrate the 4th of July with special entertainment at two of its three main parks, Epic Universe and Universal Studios, as well as its CityWalk shopping and dining district, with extra entertainment provided by live DJs, bands, stilt walkers and special character appearances by Captain America. The festivities will kick off in the evening and include a special fireworks and pyrotechnic display in honour of Independence Day.
SeaWorld gets in on the celebratory occasion with its own special presentation of fireworks – and food! That’s right, the marine park will mark the 250th with Red, White & BBQ, a coast-to-coast culinary journey featuring the bold, smoky and savory flavours that define America’s iconic BBQ regions. Guests can indulge in delicious festival favourites, including BBQ Burnt End Sliders served on sweet Hawaiian rolls, tender BBQ Ribs with creamy potato salad, and Grilled BBQ Chicken Skewers paired with golden cornbread. Then things really heat up with a patriotic fireworks overlay to its regular nightly Ignite! pyrotechnics show around the central lake.

Kissimmee’s highlights
In the heart of tourist territory along Highway 192, Old Town will host Red, White & Horsepower, a festival with a classic car show, live music, entertainment and fireworks on July 4. Explore the amusement park rides, shops and family-friendly offerings of Old Town and neighbouring Fun Spot, then look to the skies at 9.30pm for an awe-inspiring free fireworks display.
Nearby Celebration will serve up a combination of fireworks, lakeside views and old-fashioned American charm in their lovely location. Visitors are advised to arrive early for the signature parade through the town centre, and then enjoy the open-air vibe, with DJ Bubbles, live music, entertainment and food for the Star Spangled Spectacular, with the highlight of fireworks over the lake at 9.20pm.
The lively Promenade at Sunset Walk will host their annual Star Spangled Celebration, featuring fireworks, confetti, a laser light show and more. Again, aim to arrive early for street performers, live music, dining specials and fun gifts, then rock out to incredible fireworks and free, family-friendly activities throughout the night. Parking and admission are also free.

Downtown’s Big Bash
Not to be outdone, the city will stage its own July 4 shindig with extra pizzazz. This Orlando classic event, Fireworks at the Fountain, dates back nearly 50 years and brings spectacular fireworks and live entertainment to Lake Eola park, one of the most iconic spots in town. This free, family-friendly event features music, food and games from 4pm in downtown Orlando, plus spectacular fireworks, accompanied by a synchronised live performance from the Orlando Concert Band, at 9.10pm. This year, it will also honour more than two centuries of the American spirit to go with the nationwide landmark event, with free admission for all ages.
Crane’s Roost Park in Altamonte Springs offers another (free) annual highlight, notably on July 3 (not 4), that has additional verve this year. Their Red Hot and Boom presentation begins at 5pm with food trucks, live music and other festivities, culminating at 9.30pm with the magnificent main fireworks show over the lake, which is something of a local secret.

Local celebrations
Finally, there are another two key area anniversary events that are also worth seeking out for the large-scale experience. Twenty minutes north of Disney, the charming city of Winter Garden will host a variety of Independence Day events. Soak up the small-town vibes along Plant Street, then head to the lake for live music from 6pm, family-friendly games and activities, food and merchandise vendors, plus a booming fireworks finale at 9.15pm. Additional daytime celebrations include a children’s parade and breakfast (8.30-10am), a patriotic concert (noon-7pm), a Fourth of July-themed farmers market (8am-1pm), and four unique art exhibitions honouring 250 years of US history.
For a more cerebral – and quieter – occasion, Winter Park celebrates with festivities in Central Park from 6 to 9pm. The event will begin at the main stage with opening remarks from Mayor Sheila DeCiccio and continue with music from the Bach Festival Choir and Brass Ensemble, featuring a special musical tribute to America’s Semiquincentennial. Activities will also feature a Kids Zone in the West Meadow with carnival midway games, bounce slides, face painters, shaved ice and more. Cake and ice cream will be provided after the Bach Festival leads the crowd in “Happy 250th Birthday America!”
